Pittock Fog High
Overview
This is the Portland skyline shot photographers dream about—and it almost never happens.
Only 3-4 mornings a year in late fall does the city line up like this: a perfect fog inversion crawling across downtown, Mt. Hood glowing on the horizon, and a sunrise that sets the entire sky on fire with magenta and orange. From a secret vantage point high in Portland’s West Hills, I launched the drone and watched as the tops of the buildings slowly surfaced through the fog like a second horizon line. The result is this ultra-high-resolution panorama: dark evergreens in the foreground, the city floating in a sea of clouds, and Mt. Hood standing guard under a blazing Pacific Northwest sky.
This image didn’t happen by accident. It was weeks of checking forecasts, fog models, and sunrise times—classic “proper preparation prevents poor performance” in action. On this one morning, everything clicked: the weather, the color, the timing, the angle. I’ve never seen this exact combination of conditions again in person, which makes this print a truly rare moment in Portland history, captured from a perspective most people will never experience.
